Changing Leaf

A community nature hub where the outdoors inspires change nurturing children’s wellbeing, confidence and connection to the natural world

Hello, World!

Our Story

Changing Leaf was born from a simple belief that children and young people learn best when they are outdoors, feeling the weather on their skin, listening to birdsong, and being trusted with real tools, real experiences, and real freedom.

Founded by Hannah and Maxine, Changing Leaf grew from a shared passion for outdoor learning nurtured through many years in early years and primary education. As experienced primary school teachers and fully qualified Level 3 Forest School Leaders, they have seen firsthand how time spent outdoors can transform confidence, curiosity and wellbeing.

Set within their own woodland, sessions are carefully planned yet flexible, shaped by the changing seasons and the needs of the children who attend. From den building and bushcraft to campfire skills and natural crafts, every experience invites exploration, creativity and hands‑on learning.

At the heart of Changing Leaf is a simple philosophy: when children are given the space to connect with the outdoors, they learn to take risks safely, build resilience, and develop a strong, positive sense of self.

This new adventure is an exciting one. In a world increasingly shaped by screens and technology, Changing Leaf offers something essential … time, space and guidance for children and young people to slow down, reconnect, and truly thrive through meaningful outdoor experiences.

About Us

Our forest adventure takes place in the magical ancient woodland of Talberis Wood, on the edge of Leaden Roding in North Essex. Set across two acres of natural woodland, the site is shaped by time, weather and quiet transformation. Beneath a living canopy of ancient trees, from the mighty Oak to the humble Hawthorn, the woodland tells a story of change: growth, decay, renewal and survival.

Within this ever‑evolving landscape are rich habitats where insects and animals adapt, build, and thrive in an undisturbed environment. These natural cycles provide a powerful backdrop for children to witness change firsthand, learning that strength comes from flexibility, patience and connection.

Changing Leaf is more than a place; it is a calm and nurturing community hub where learners experience the natural world directly. Here, children develop bushcraft and practical life skills, learn safe and respectful tool use, create natural artworks from woodland materials, and discover the ancient craft of making fire and collecting water using natural elements. Each experience supports personal growth, confidence and resilience, helping young people realise they, too, are capable of change.

We are fortunate to have our own on‑site log cabin, allowing forestry and craftwork to take place both indoors and outdoors in all seasons, alongside a solar‑operated compost toilet that reflects our commitment to sustainable living. These features support year‑round learning while encouraging thoughtful, responsible interaction with the environment.

Our forest exploration sessions run throughout the week and are led by experienced Level 3 Forest School‑trained professionals. As the woodland shifts with the seasons, so do our sessions, responding to weather, wildlife and the needs of each group. The awe and wonder of the woodland sparks curiosity, encourages thoughtful questions, and helps children explore an ever‑changing world with confidence.

At Changing Leaf, we embrace the natural changes we see around us and inspire the inner changes that help children and young people grow strong, resilient and ready for the world beyond the woods.

Our sessions

Hawthorns (preschool)

Our Hawthorn Leaves group is a gentle introduction to the woodland. Like the small, soft leaves of the hawthorn tree, children are nurtured, protected and encouraged to explore at their own pace. Sessions focus on wonder, sensory play and simple woodland experiences, helping our youngest learners feel safe, curious and connected as they take their very first steps outdoors.

Beech (5 to 10 years)

The Beech Leaves group represents a time of growth and discovery. Beech leaves are strong yet flexible, much like the children in this stage of development. Through hands‑on woodland skills, creative play and teamwork, children build confidence, independence and a deeper understanding of the natural world, learning to adapt, problem‑solve and thrive outdoors.

Oak (11 to 16 years)

Oak Leaves symbolise strength, resilience and endurance. This group supports young people through a time of change, offering meaningful outdoor challenges that develop leadership, self‑belief and emotional wellbeing. Rooted in the calm of the woodland, sessions encourage reflection, responsibility and strong connections—with nature, others and themselves.
